Maya Kodes: a new generation singer

Have you heard of Maya Kodes? She’s a very unique young pop artist launching her first single Boomerang live on Facebook tonight à 7:30 p.m. She is definitely going to make waves since she’s the first interactive virtual singer, created in Montreal by

Made in Montreal

Yves Saint-Gelais, the producer of ICI Laflaque (you read it right!) airing on Radio-Canada, and his team are the ones behind the creation of Maya Kodes. Obviously, a singer also needs a music production team. The collaborators include big names like Starkillers (an American DJ who have worked Avicii) and Wayem who created together the electronic sound of her song. The song was written by Jane Cerf who wrote for artists like Eva Avila. Mario Lefebvre is also part of the project. He is a management consultant who worked with Céline Dion for a long time.

Who’s Maya?

Maya is a blonde digital entity with a ballerina silhouette created during the millennium bug. She has discovered a love for music while observing the bond that we, humans, have with it. Maya targets a young audience so she inspires from Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez both for her music style which has pop and electronic influences and her sense of fashion. It is important to her to show a positive image and it’s funny how she experiments the range of human emotions, just like teenagers do. For example, love is a recurrent theme in her songs. Because of her digital nature, she has a lot to learn about human logic. She takes everything at the first level which sometimes leads to funny moments. I would have like her to show more personality and attitude but let’s hope she will gain experience sooner than later. Just like every young girl, you can follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I have to admit that when I was a singer, I would have loved to be replaced by a hologram for a few nights. But most of all I wish I was able to change outfit as fast as she does!

Many teams around the globe are working on developing the technique. The very first virtual singer is Hatsune Miku, a manga style animated Japanese pop star with long turquoise hair and a robot voice who attracts crowds in Asia. She just completed her first tour in the US, singing in playback.

We all remember Tupack who came back to life to sing with JayZ at the Coachella festival in 2012.

Today,’s team pushes the boundaries of what’s possible by introducing the first complete and interactive character in the world. Maya opens the door to new possibilities: she’s a 3D character able to interact in real time with her public. She will be on stage tonight with her dancers for the launch of her first single Boomerang. She will be able to react to her public’s enthusiasm and to answer questions. If you want to see her in action, go on her Facebook page ( tonight at 7:30 p.m. In the mean time, know that she is very nervous to finally be unveiled to the public to the point that her digital DNA plays tricks on her!
